Cevital Sugar Refinery – Algeria on the Path to Food Sovereignty

Cevital is aligning with Algeria’s national strategy for food independence through the launch of a major sugar refinery project with a production capacity of 500,000 tons per year, implemented in two phases. This initiative will enable the country to cover over 35% of its national sugar needs.

A Strategic Agricultural Breakthrough

In September 2023, Cevital launched the first sugar beet plantations in the Hassi El F’hel region, marking a decisive step in assessing the agricultural viability of the project and refining soil and hydrological studies.

These initial successes paved the way for an expanded crop testing program across several southern regions, yielding highly promising results. The cultivated sugar beets have demonstrated exceptionally high sugar content, exceeding European standards, confirming Algeria’s strong potential to develop a competitive and sustainable sugar industry.

A Step Toward National Self-Sufficiency

Through this structural project, Algeria is taking a strategic leap toward self-sufficiency in sugar production, establishing sugar beet as a key national crop. This initiative will significantly reduce import dependency and strengthen national food sovereignty, reinforcing the country’s position in the global agri-industrial landscape.
